And the answer is...!

FOURTH!

I finished fourth. And it gets worse.

So I'm still reeling from misspelling "perlustrate" (it means to read with care) and watching the top three go at it in fine spelling bee fashion when all of a sudden it's over. The winning word was "glockenspiel". Are you kidding? Glockenspiel? I lost on perlustrate and I could have won with glockenspiel?!?!?! Twenty-one years later and I can't forget it!!!

Anyway, the guy who ran the bee is now calling people on stage to present them with prizes. He asks for fourth place George Reuter -- seventh grade, four foot nine, eighty pound George Reuter. With the dorky haircut. He says, "George may not want this prize... it's the Random House Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language." The thing weighed a ton.

So after the bee is over, I'm hanging out over cheese and crackers at a side room in the CW Post Auditorium looking at the third place kid marvel over his cool clock radio and the second place kid drool over his color TV (first place gets the all expense paid trip to Washington DC), and I've got this gigantic dictionary in my arms that weighs as much as I do. Great.

When I get home, I look up "perlustrate." It's NOT IN THE DICTIONARY!! No joke. In fact, it's not at dictionary.com (I just checked). It is in the website entitled "Dictionary of Difficult Words", so I guess I don't feel too bad. If I'm going to lose, that's not a bad word on which to lose.

So the answer to the poll is FOURTH, and I am the only person who got it right. That means I get Uncle Stephen's cash prize. Didn't he say it was $100??

Blessings,
George

Thanks for the story. I will put it the Blog archives.

However, it looks like you did not perlustrate the contest rules. I wrote that "with every 100 GUESSES, you'll recieve One dollar with Captain Kirks image emblazed on the front"

Now how could you have ever mixed up THAT rule?

Love & Affection,
Uncle Stephen

Captain Kirk's image?? Do you think I'm some kind of geek??

I'm honored to have been the first grandchild honored by the Blogmaster, and hope the rest of the honoreds are treated as well as I have been treated on this blog.

The Kirk statement is actually rooted in fact. When i was young, cousin John Goodman visited grandma one afternoon. We were standing by the fridge, and he pulled out of his wallet a dollar bill with Kirks image on it. He swore to it's authenticity. It wasn't until a few years later i came to the conclusion i had been hoodwinked. But at the time, I would have given my Evil Knievel doll for that bill !

George, how you remember that day in such detail!!! There were 300 kids who competed and you came in 4th. That is "superlative". I know that book went with you everywhere. Where is it today??? It is great keeping in touch this way even if I do have to go on this computer. Equal my hugs and kisses with Aunt Joyce's. Take care of Nicky for Mother's Day. Love to all in my family.

Mom

I'll bet that dictionary is not as heavy as it was so long ago! Love to all, and wish Nicky a Happy Mother's Day!
